Meet QCP’s Superstar – Kyrie

Meet QCP’s Superstar – Kyrie

“He is now walking independently without a walker or a walking device … Kyrie is our superstar!”

Born prematurely at 28 weeks – and weighing 3 lbs. 4 oz. – Kyrie began his life in NICU for three months. Now, at four years old, he is making strides that didn’t seem possible nearly a year ago when he first entered our APPLE Preschool program.

Here we are able to provide him with the special education services he needs to continue growing physically, educationally and socially.

When he first entered our doors, he was unable to communicate with his peers and teachers and was presenting as a severe toe walker. Since coming to school, various interventions were provided to him and his family. With this support, he is now able to produce signs and directly select vocabulary on communication boards to use words to express his wants and needs and; thanks to a custom pair of solid ankle foot orthotics, along with placing him in an upright stander during school hours, he is much happier and more independent when it comes to walking. He is able to keep his ankles down to the ground, ascend and descend the stairs with hand support on the rail and is now walking and running all over the place!

Kyrie’s unwavering enthusiasm for occupational therapy is truly remarkable. His favorite part of these sessions is undoubtedly the sensory equipment – particularly the swing. Whenever he encounters the swing, he has increased eye contact, his face lights and he vocalizes his excitement too!

In his short time at APPLE, Kyrie has made significant progress physically, educationally and socially. He is showing great interest in interacting and approaching with his peers, has expanded his abilities in the classroom and in therapy, is more willing to make communication attempts, and expanding his ability to interact with a variety of toys and learning materials.

We are so proud of Kyrie. The remarkable progress he’s made is a shining example of how QCP impacts the lives of those we have helped for 73 years.

By increasing children’s independence and self-confidence, we help them soar.

Our children’s center relies on private contributions that enable QCP to purchase costly equipment, enhance our programs and services,
and defray the costs of therapeutic and educational services – like the ones offered to Kyrie.
