Footsteps for Progress 5K Color Bash a hit with the community!

Flushing Meadows Corona Park was anything but ordinary on Sunday, April 26, as Queens Centers for Progress (QCP) turned its annual Footsteps for Progress 5K into its first-ever Color Bash 5K—and the result was a morning full of color, movement, and nonstop energy.

Participants of all ages and abilities made their way through the course—running, walking, or rolling— wrapped in cheers, laughter, and clouds of color that seemed to lift everyone along. Strangers encouraged one another like old friends, the sidelines came alive with support, and each finish line crossing felt less like an individual achievement and more like a collective triumph.

Councilmember Shanel Thomas-Henry set the tone as Grand Marshal, warmly welcoming participants and helping launch a day defined by connection and celebration. QCP also extends heartfelt appreciation to Councilmember James F. Gennaro for his continued support and presence within the community.

The morning kicked off with a high-energy warm-up led by GYMGUYZ, sparking excitement that carried straight into the Kids Fun Run, where young participants stole the spotlight and hearts alike. Surrounded by proud families and enthusiastic cheers, they dashed forward with pure joy. By the time the 5K began, the park was alive with motion—waves of color, encouragement, and determination carrying participants every step of the way.

At the front of the pack, Kevin Montalvo claimed the male overall title and overall first place with an impressive time of 18:09, while Salina Urben led the way for the women, finishing strong in 27:44. Their accomplishments added to a day already filled with inspiring moments at every pace.

And even as the race ended, the celebration refused to slow down. The Queensboro Dance Festival brought people together in a vibrant performance that drew smiles and applause, while keeping the momentum alive with an infectious dance session that invited everyone—participants, families, and spectators—to move, and savor the moment just a little longer.

QCP extends its deepest gratitude to the sponsors, fundraisers, and community partners whose generosity and support made this unforgettable day possible. Special recognition goes to major sponsors Stop & Shop, Arch Insurance, Northwell Connect, and Mukti Petroleum.

Additional thanks to Dunkin’ Donuts, Driscoll Foods, and Frito Lay for keeping participants energized, and to the incredible volunteers—including teams from Stop & Shop, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and QCP’s dedicated staff—whose enthusiasm and care brought every detail to life.

As the inaugural Color Bash 5K, this event was more than a new tradition, it was a powerful reminder of what happens when a community shows up with open hearts and shared purpose. It was laughter, connection, and color woven into something truly meaningful. And if this first year is any indication, the future promises something even brighter—an ever-growing celebration of community, where everyone belongs and every step matters.
