Thomas Heaney, a program participant at Queens Centers for Progress was the Mets’ special guest on Saturday August 20th as part of the Mets’ Amazin’ Calls Program. As part of the program, every Met player will call a deserving person and invite them to a weekend game at Citi Field. The first lucky fan of the program, QCP’s Thomas Heaney, received a call from relief pitcher Tim Byrdak on August 18th inviting him to the game on the 20th. Thomas is an avid Mets fan, knows all of the players’ names and is very verbal about his love for the Mets. Thomas, who has intellectual disabilities and mild seizures, has been with QCP for 17 years, including the Supported Employment program at TJ Maxx from 2001-2005. He volunteers at senior centers to help others and is involved in many types of community service.
Thomas and his family had the privilege of joining Tim Byrdak on the field prior to the game, got to sit next to the Mets’ dugout during the game and smiled from ear to ear when they flashed his name on the scoreboard! Also present was Ed Charles, the 1969 World Champion Mets third baseman, who frequently visits the QCP Center and is acquainted with Thomas.
